Insurance

No matter how careful we strive to be, accidents do occasionally happen which is why it is so important to have insurance cover.

Insuring your belongings

Your goods may be covered by your homeowners’ or renters’ policy, if you already have one - check with your agent or carrier to find out.

For commercial movers who do not have insurance cover, this may be a good time to investigate insurance options for office content and loss of business. These types of policies may be less expensive than you think and are generally very comprehensive. Contact our office staff at 1st Generation Moving for more information.

What we offer

Shipments valued up to $50,000.00 are always covered by option 1, detailed below. This insurance is available on the day of the move itself.

You should inform 1st Generation Moving if your shipment is valued at more than $50,000.00 and/or includes items individually valued at more than $5,000.00/artwork/items of extraordinary value.

Shipments valued at more than $50,000 will need to be insured for full replacement value coverage (see option 2 below) and you will need to take out this insurance prior to actual moving day.

Option 1:

  • This is provided by 1st Generation Moving free of charge to our clients but does not offer total protection for your goods.

  • This is the insurance that is included in our Written Binding Estimates.

Under option 1, the total amount you will be entitled to recover, in the event of loss or damage, is $0.60 (sixty cents) per pound per article, regardless of the article’s actual value. So if a vase weighing 10 pounds gets broken the most you can expect to receive is $6 even if the vase is actually worth a whole lot more.

Option 2: Insurance for Full Replacement Value

This coverage option involves more paperwork and needs to be obtained prior to the actual move day.

This coverage is more comprehensive than option 1 above and usually offers choices including higher coverage, deductible levels, etc.

In the past our clients have used two insurance companies - Baker International and MovingInsurance.com – both of which offer full replacement value moving insurance direct to the mover. We will be pleased to provide more details about these companies on request.

Certificate of Insurance

You should always investigate how much insurance your moving company carries before you contract their services.

If the buildings at your current or future locations require more insurance than the moving company is covered for, then the movers will not be allowed inside to work. In addition, nearly every residential building with an elevator will require insurance certificates prior to any work performed on the premises.

At 1st Generation we maintain a substantial amount of insurance for both your and our peace of mind. Besides the obligatory Disability and Worker's Compensation insurance coverage we also hold in excess of 1 million dollars’ worth of General Liability insurance.
